If you want each thread to have it's own world, then you should not be 
passing by reference.

To get a GROUP out of a STRING, just put a local variable of the same 
GROUP type, OVER the STRING parameter.  Eg

g GROUP
i  LONG
j  SHORT
   END

   START(StartThread, 5000, g)

StartThread PROCEDURE(STRING param)
g GROUP(g),OVER(param)
   END
