Have you tried the phpdev4 package at www.firepages.com.au? It is a zipped
up setup of Apache/PHP/MySQL for Windows. No need to mess with setting etc.
Just unzip and go. You can have it all running on your PC in minutes. The
download is just around 14MB.

That way you can get your feet wet with PHP/Apache/MySQL as quickly as
possible. That is unless you want to learn all the configuration details of
Apache. I took the phpdev4 route myself and that was very helpful. You
can always learn the details of httpd.conf at your own pace. (If you go to
that site, skip the phpdev5 package and go for the phpdev4 package as it is
more stable. phpdev5 is in beta yet).
