Non-Development: Reduce fan noise 2002-03-03 -- Dave Harms Newsgroups: topspeed.topic.general For those of you who, like me, really don't like noisy case fans, here's some very useful software: Motherboard Monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/). It won't slow your fans down, but if you do something crazy like run your fans at 7 volts instead of 12, MBM will tell you (and if necessary warn you by email or other alarm) if your processor gets too hot. Very slick. I found that under typical loads (my dev machine is actually idle much of the time, since I'm not continuously compiling or doing database access) I could run one case fan at 7 volts instead of 12, and disable the other fan entirely, and motherboard temp only went up from 24C to 27C, while processor (Athlon 1800) temp went up from 47C to 52C, still well under the max 95C. Of course, this all assumes your motherboard has the sensors built in. MBM can also monitor various system voltages and fan speeds, if the sensors are there.
