Par2: Network speed 2000-03-16 -- Dave Schwartz This may be totally unrelated, but bear with me... there might be a connection. We have a Win98 network and DSL. Our Unix box controls the DSL. The Unix machine was getting about 200k per second transfer rate while the Windows machines were getting only 25k. A local TCPIP guro told us to check the settings of the "Browse Master." Now, I had never heard of "Browse Master." Went to NetWork Neighborhood>Properties>File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks>Properties and there it was! Browse Master (supposedly) should be disabled. When we disabled it, and rebooted, the Windows machines were almost 9 times faster across the network! The guru's story was that the machines "fight each other" to be the "browse master."
